On average someone is killed by a drunk driver every 45 minutes.  It is estimated that a first time drunk driving offender has driven drunk 87 times prior to being arrested.  In 2008 alone 11,773 people died in alcohol related crashes in the United States.  An average of 50 to 75 percent of drunk drivers whose licenses are suspended continue to drive.

In 2008, 534 lives were lost in Pennsylvania due to driving under the influence (DUI).  That same year, there were 12,753 alcohol-related crashes in Pennsylvania alone.  On average, 35 alcohol-related traffic crashes occurred every day resulting in the death of 1.5 people and injuries to 26 people.  Although alcohol-related crashes accounted for approximately 10% of the total Pennsylvania crashes in 2008, they were responsible for 36% crash-related deaths.  Alcohol-related crashes were almost 5 times more likely to result in death than those not involving alcohol.
