John B. Shook

Considered by his peers as one of the most successful and innovative trial lawyers in Nevada, Mr. Shook has the distinction of being the firm's most experienced trial counsel.

Raised in a small town on the Oklahoma plains, Mr. Shook graduated from Hobart High School. Upon graduation, Mr. Shook went on to earn a B.S. with double major of marketing and management, with Honors, from Oklahoma State University. He then went on to receive his law degree from the University of Oklahoma.

After graduation from law school, Mr. Shook moved with his wife, Julie, a deputy district attorney, to Las Vegas, where he began work for a small but successful firm overseeing the handling each of the firm’s personal injury and criminal cases. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Shook began his own law firm prosecuting and defending both civil and criminal actions ranging from severe injury claims to capital murder trials. In 1997, Mr. Shook began his partnership with Leonard Stone creating the firm of Shook & Stone.

Mr. Shook is a past member of the Board of Governors for the Nevada Trial Lawyers Association where he has been honored for his help in enacting legislation aiding Nevada’s injured and disabled. In addition, Mr. Shook is also a Colleague with the Nevada Law Foundation; a member of the American Association for Justice; and a graduate of both the National Criminal Defense College and the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. Prior to its dissolution by the Nevada legislature, Mr. Shook was a member of the Nevada Medical Legal Screening Panel which reviewed for merit all medical malpractice claims filed in the state of Nevada. He has also served as an arbitrator for the Eighth Judicial District court-annexed arbitration program.

Mr. Shook dedication to the ethical practice of law is evidenced by his position as Chair of the State Bar of Nevada's Client Security Fund Committee. Mr. Shook also facilitated passage of a law requiring insurance companies to notify payees when their settlement drafts are issued in an effort to curtail theft by unscrupulous attorneys of their client’s personal injury settlement proceeds.

Mr. Shook is frequently called upon to share his knowledge of worker's compensation and personal injury law, and is the author of an article published the Nevada Trial Lawyer’s Association magazine entitled "Medicare 101: A Primer for the Personal Injury Attorney". Mr. Shook also co-authored an article published in 2008 for the Nevada Lawyer, the state bar’s monthly magazine, explaining the purpose and benefit to the bar of the Nevada Client Security Fund.

Mr. Shook has succesfully trial to verdict numerous jury trials, including a recent verdict award totaling over $8,500,000.  Other cases successfully resolved include a $4,900,000 medical malpractice settlement; a $3,000,000 medical malpractice settlement;  and, most recently, a motor vehicle collision settlement totalling $2,500,000.

Outside the practice of law, Mr. Shook enjoys playing golf and flag football, and spending time with his family. He also enjoys running, recently completing the Las Vegas Marathon.
